Ratan Jot is native to the Mediterranean, and India. It comes from the Alkanna tinctoria herb. The roots have been used for their special red dye since antiquity.
The dye is used as a wood stain. The roots become a dye when mixed with oil, or alcohol. The dye also gives colour to wines and vegetable oils. It is used in some Indian dishes to give them their signature red colour.
It has no smell or flavour.
