Amla is from the Indian Subcontinent. It is the fruit from the Phyllanthus emblica tree. This deciduous tree, and its berries, are also known as the Indian gooseberry.
Amla can be eaten raw, as well as being cooked. Amla is traditionally consumed after meals.
These berries have also been used in Ayurvedic medicine. They are used in shampoos, ink, hair oil, and tannin.
