Basil- Originating in Central Africa and South East Asia, there are many varieties of basil. Basil is an incredibly popular herb used in thousands of dishes worldwide. The most commonly sold and used type of basil is called Genovese basil. It is used in cooking and baking. It is also known as sweet basil.
Basil is generally the last ingredient added to dishes, as it has such a strong aroma and flavour. The leaves can be used to thicken soups. The seeds may be washed and used in desserts. They have a gelatine like consistency. Basil has also been used in Ayurvedic medicine.
It is aromatic, and sweet tasting.
