The red flower of this plant is symbolic of the Hindu goddess, Kali and the plant is used as an offering in Hindu worship. The yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii. Hibiscuses are also the national flowers of Haiti, The Solomon Islands, South Korea, and Malaysia. In the Philippines, the flowers are crushed and used to make bubbles for children to play with.
Hibiscus leaves can be used medicinally in a tea. They are also used as a candied garnish in Mexico.
The bark of the hibiscus plant is used in rope making and the flowers can be used in landscaping to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Hibiscus smells floral and musky and tastes similar to pomegranates or cranberries.
