Libyan Bazaar Spice

A North African blend of turmeric, caraway and coriander built around a seven spice mix. Caraway is what marks it out, nutty and faintly aniseed, running under the earthy turmeric and giving the blend a savoury edge most Middle Eastern mixes do not have.

Turmeric adds an earthy richness and golden hue, caraway nutty savoury notes that pair well with meats and stews, and coriander a touch of citrus brightness. The seven spice mix underneath brings the complexity and warmth. The blend is inspired by the markets of Libya.

How to use it

Use it on grilled meats, roasted vegetables, rice dishes and stews, around a tablespoon per 500g of meat or a large pan of vegetables. Technique tip: caraway's aromatic oil is volatile, so add the blend during the second half of a long-simmered stew rather than right at the start. Cook it too long and its distinctive note disappears, leaving a plain turmeric base behind.

The shaker jar

The jar option is packed in a clear 8 oz shaker jar made from lightweight, food-safe PET, so the colour and texture of the blend are visible at a glance. The flip-top cap opens to a three-hole sifter for an even sprinkle straight over the pan, the grill or the plate, and closes again with a simple press. A pressure-sensitive liner seals the jar until first use, and the fitted cap keeps the blend fresh between uses. When a recipe calls for a measured spoonful, simply unscrew the cap; the wide mouth takes a teaspoon with ease. Once empty, the jar is easy to refill with your next Ameen blend and makes a practical home for dried herbs, chilli flakes, sesame seeds or homemade rubs. Hand wash only.
