Menthol Oil
Menthol Oil is a concentrated aromatic oil taken from peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) through a distillation and freezing process. The aroma is sharp, cool and minty, more like a peppermint sweet than fresh mint leaf, and it carries the distinct cooling sensation menthol is known for. Its main component is menthol.
It is widely used in aromatherapy and personal care: in balms and rubs for that cooling sensation, in oral care products for its refreshing taste, and in personal care formulations for its scent.
How to use it
Diffuse two or three drops for a crisp, clean note in a room, on its own or alongside eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender or peppermint. For a massage oil or a home-made balm, dilute it well in a carrier oil such as sweet almond or jojoba and keep it away from the eyes and off broken skin. The technique tip: add it at the very end of a blend rather than the start. It is concentrated enough to flatten softer floral and herbaceous oils, so mix a small test batch, leave it an hour, then smell it again before making up a full bottle.
