Multani Matti is originally from Multan, which is now known as Pakistan. Also known as Fuller’s Earth, this is a substance that is clay-like but thinner than clay with more water in it.
In Pakistan and the Indian subcontinent, it is exclusively used in beauty products. The name translates to ‘mud of Multan’ and it can be used as a clay-like face mask or for other cosmetic purposes. It is used on film sets to create ‘dirt’ explosions on screen, and in use with film pyrotechnics. It has also been used for make up on film. It can be used to clean marble, and has in fact, been used when cleaning the Taj Mahal.
