Pistachio - Native to Central Asia and the Middle East. Pistachios are a seed from a small tree. They were first cultivated as a food during the Bronze Age, in what is today known as Uzbekistan.
Pistachios are commonly used in desserts such as ice cream and gelato.The nuts can be eaten whole as well as being made into pastes and used in Baklava, and biscotti among a great variety of other dishes.
Pistachios can also be made into an essential oil.
Pistachios have a mild flavour, and taste a bit sweet. They smell nutty and savoury.
If they are too tightly packed, due to high fat content and dryness, pistachios have been known to spontaneously combust.
