Taramira Seeds (Arugula Seeds)

Taramira Seeds come from the Eruca sativa plant and are known for their strong, pungent, slightly bitter flavor. Commonly used in Rajasthan and other parts of India, these small, dark seeds add depth and sharpness to traditional dishes. They’re often incorporated into pickles, chutneys, and regional spice mixes where a bold, earthy note is desired.

Taramira Seeds are also the source of Taramira oil, which has long-standing cultural uses in both cooking and haircare across South Asia. In their whole form, the seeds offer an authentic taste of traditional Indian cuisine, especially in recipes that call for an intense, unmistakable aroma.

The seeds are small and reddish-brown, with a sharp, mustard-like pungency and a bitter, nutty edge. Taramira is the seed of the rocket plant, the same species as the salad leaf, and it is also called rocket seeds, arugula seeds or jamba seeds. It is a traditional ingredient in pickle masalas, where the pungency balances oil, salt and sour fruit.

How to use it
Use about half a teaspoon per cup of pickle, chutney or vegetable dish, or lightly crack the seeds and add them to a spice mix. Technique tip: dry roast the seeds for a minute or two, then crush them, which softens the raw bite and brings out a warmer, nuttier aroma. Store in an airtight jar away from light and damp.
