Organic Yerba Mate Tea is the cut and dried leaf of the yerba mate plant, the traditional drink of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil. It brews a bright, grassy and slightly earthy cup with a pleasant, gently bitter edge, somewhere between green tea and a herbal infusion, and it is traditionally shared from a gourd and sipped through a metal straw called a bombilla.
Yerba mate contains naturally occurring caffeine.
How to use it
Brew with water around 70 to 80°C rather than boiling, which turns mate harsh. In a teapot or infuser, use one to two teaspoons per 250ml cup and steep for three to five minutes. In a traditional gourd, fill it about two thirds with leaf, tilt it to one side, moisten with a little cool water, then add hot water and sip through a bombilla, topping up many times.
