Edible Clay (Slate)

This natural clay is supplied in solid pieces with an earthy appearance and a firm, chalky texture. Commonly called slate clay, it is a mineral material rather than a herb, spice or botanical powder.

The pieces are sold by weight in three sizes, 100g, 400g and 1kg, and are supplied dry. Expect an earthy, matte look, and expect the pieces to differ in size and surface from one to the next, which is normal for a natural mineral.

Product form

Choose this listing for clay pieces rather than finely milled clay. Natural variation in the size, shape and colour of the pieces is part of the material's appearance.

Material identity and handling

The traditional name edible clay does not by itself establish a food-grade specification or suitability for ingestion. Do not consume clay without product-specific confirmation of its identity and suitability from the supplier. Avoid inhaling dust when handling the dry material.

Store the pieces in a closed, dry container away from moisture, since clay can soften or crumble when damp, and keep them apart from food and spices to avoid mix ups. Wash your hands after handling, and wipe up dust with a damp cloth rather than sweeping, so it stays out of the air.
