Mallow Leaves are the dried leaves of common mallow, Malva sylvestris, a hardy flowering herb native to Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. The broad green leaves dry to a soft, crinkled texture with a mild, fresh, gently earthy aroma.
Mallow Leaves are also called common mallow leaf, high mallow and wild mallow. Cooks across the Mediterranean and the Middle East have gathered mallow as a leafy green for generations, and the dried leaf brews to a pale, smooth cup with a soft, silky body.
Culinary Charm and Herbal Comfort
Mild and versatile, Mallow Leaves belong in both the teapot and the cooking pot:
- Herbal Teas & Infusions: When steeped, they release a gentle, mucilaginous texture that creates a smooth brew.
- Soups & Stews: Adds body and a green herbal note, as in Levantine khubeiza and Turkish ebegümeci dishes.
- Cooked Greens: Soaked and sautéed with garlic, olive oil and lemon, in the style of Moroccan bakoula.
- Tea Blends: Pairs well with chamomile, mint or lemon balm.
Their mild, rounded character makes them a dependable staple for home cooks and tea blenders alike.
