Onion Salt

Finely ground onion powder blended with fine sea salt. It tastes savoury and rounded, the way the bottom of a pan smells after onions have softened, and it dissolves quickly so the onion flavour goes through a dish rather than sitting on top in pieces.

Because the onion is already dried and ground, it delivers that flavour with no peeling, chopping or cooking time, and with consistent strength from one jar to the next.

Onion salt is a pantry staple for burgers, meatloaf, roasted potatoes, dips, dressings and popcorn. It blends well with garlic, black pepper, paprika and dried herbs, and it is often used in homemade seasoning salts and spice rubs. Keep the jar away from steam and wet spoons so it does not clump.

How to use it

Use it on meats and vegetables, in soups and casseroles, and sprinkled over popcorn, fries and eggs for a quick lift. It works as a table seasoning and a cooking one. Technique tip: it is salt-based, so treat it as a replacement for the salt in a recipe rather than an addition. A teaspoon of onion salt in place of a teaspoon of salt is about the right swap; adding both together will oversalt the dish.
